Every time you watch a little bar on your app transfer from “order placed” to “out for delivery,” you have Domino’s to thank.

In the mid-2000s, David Haubenstricker was in Domino’s IT division when the company was struggling after scrapping its well-known 30-minute supply guarantee, according to NPR’s Planet Money podcast. Customers were getting too anxious ready for their pizzas to arrive without any approach to know what was truly taking place. So Haubenstricker’s staff constructed the Domino’s Pizza Tracker, a real-time animation of a pizza’s journey from order to supply. It debuted before the 2006 Super Bowl and turned an on the spot sensation.

That concept has since unfold in all places. Design director Shuya Gong informed NPR she now calls this sample “the pizza tracker” with shoppers across all sorts of industries — Uber and restore retailers all use some model. Researchers call the psychology behind it the “labor illusion,” seeing evidence of work in progress makes people trust and worth the wait.

But it has a darker facet too. Gong said she’s helped banks deliberately sluggish down trackers for transactions that truly occur immediately, because the actual pace felt unsettling. TurboTax’s standing animations reportedly run the same size regardless of what’s truly taking place behind the scenes.
